shita atapa, vata varishana,
e dina yamini jagi’ re
viphale sevinu, kripana durajana,
capala sukha-lava lagi’ re (2)

śīta=the cold; ātapa=the heat; vāta=the wind; bariṣaṇa=the rain; e=this; dina=the day; yāminī=the night; jāgi=I remain sleepless; re–O!; biphale–uselessly, fail; sevinu–I have served; kṛpaṇa = miserly men , durajana–wicked men; capala–flickering, momentarily; sukha=happiness, lava=obtain, lāgi' –for the purpose of; re–O!

Day and night I remain without sleep, suffering the pains of heat and cold, wind and rain. In vain, simply for some insignificant, flickering happiness which can be lost at any moment, I have uselessly served wicked and miserly people (thieves interested only in their own happiness, opposed to my doing bhakti).

e dhana, yauvana, putra, parijana,
ithe ki ache paratiti re
kamala-dala-jala, jivana talamala,
bhajahu hari-pada niti re (3)

e–this; dhana–wealth; yauvana–youth; putra–sons; parijana–family members; ithe–in these; ki āche–what is in it?; paratīti–understanding; re–O!; kamala=lotus's, dala– petal; jala–water; jīvana–this life; ṭalamala–is tottering; bhajahu–you should always worship; hari=Lord Hari, pada= feet, nīti–always uninterruptedly; re–O!

Wealth, youth, sons, and relatives - what real happiness do they hold? This life is flickering, like a drop of water tottering on the leaf of a lotus flower - at any moment it can fall off. (Similarly, there is no guarantee when this life will end.) Therefore, always serve the lotus feet of Shri Hari.
